What Everyone Ought to Know About Mentors

Without a doubt, the number one thing you can ever do for yourself is find a mentor. I am not talking about your dad or brother either. Whatever you are doing right now, look at someone who is doing 10x better than you. If you are working out, look for the guy that is 10x better looking and stronger than you. If you are starting an online eCommerce store, look for the guy selling 10x the amount of products that you are aiming to sell.

I talk about the exponential learning curve all the time because of how powerful the concept is. Every day that you can build a stronger infrastructure and foundation for your efforts is a day well spent, because tomorrow you will be able to leverage that power to push forward even faster. What can mentors do for this? It is obvious. Mentors can take you on day one and show you the industry “best practices.” They can get you to parody and help you develop ideas to innovate above the competition.

Using online advertising as an example: instead of spending four months trying to figure out how to write headlines and target specific demographics to get the engagement and reach that you are seeking, you can talk to a baller and in one day have all of that covered. You are then in a position to start building out your own strategy and adding in your own ingenuity and creativity to dominate.

Finding a mentor isn’t even that hard given today’s resources. It all goes back to that magical word that I talk about all the time: Hustle. Older guys that are wise to the game want to find a younger guy with energy and passion. The mentors that I have been able to find and work with understand that the investment is going to pay off huge for them in the long run. They are spending time up front to develop me and provide me with the information to get started. They know that, armed with this information, I will be able to put my energy and grind into the equation to get insane results from the get go. This means that years down the line I will be able to give back to them tenfold.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. Go to LinkedIn and find all of the alumni from your college. Then you can go through and look at only the alumni who are involved in the industry that you want to get into. Say you want to get into banking. You just run a quick search for Vice Presidents and Managing Directors at large financial institutions. Reach out to them asking for advice and a quick phone call. If you did your homework and you are armed with a solid resume that shows you put time and effort in, you are going to come out of the gate and impress them. On top of that, alumni tend to stick together and feel a need to help those who sing their Alma Mater.
  2. Want to get involved in internet business? Go to forums and find Skype groups where online entrepreneurs and digital markets congregate. The only downside to this is that a lot of people will lead you astray. Make sure you do your homework and sniff out the people who are just looking to lie to you to boost their ego. If you look hard enough though, there are awesome resources out there. And the best part about digital marketing is that literally all of the best information for the business is given out for free. Why? Again, the people who have reached success realize that 99.9% of people will never actually take action on what they see. It’s insane when you think about it. People are literally trying to hand you the keys to the castle, begging you take it. But because the castle is at the top of a hill that requires a long hike, you defer.
  3. Want to get better at socializing? Seek out an alpha male in your life and stick around them. Observe how they act and pump up their ego. People love to talk about themselves. If you show up and prove to be truly interested in them, they will open up to you and give you anything and everything that you want to see.

The bottom line here is to find someone who has taken the trail already and know the path. They will be able to guide you and keep you from hours of wasted time. There is the real value. When it comes down to it, time is the most valuable asset that you will ever have. You will never be able to get more time. When your life is over, it is over. That is why finding a mentor can be so powerful. Finding one will improve your bottom line and raise your ceiling and end-game potential.

Don’t be discouraged when people don’t respond to your outreach. It happens and you need to have thick skin. This game isn’t for the faint of heart. Before I found my mentor I literally sent hundreds of emails and made countless phone calls. I reach out on every single platform that I could find. When someone didn’t respond or jive with me, I didn’t take offense. I just moved on. In the end though, it all worked out.

Don’t hesitate on this. Honestly, this may be one of the most powerful pieces of advice you have ever heard. Hopefully you realize it and take action. For those that do, and actually find a mentor, the possibilities are literally unlimited.
